The defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning have advanced to the semifinal round after defeating the Carolina Hurricanes 2-0 in Game 5. The Lightning won the Central Division Final 4-1 and are the second team to advance to the semifinals.
The Lightning will compete in the third round of the playoffs for the fifth time in the last seven seasons and for the third time in the past four years. They will face the winner of the second-round series between the Boston Bruins and New York Islanders. The Islanders lead that series 3-2 and can eliminate the Bruins with a win on home ice in Game 6 Wednesday.
