Liverpool ramming not being treated as terrorism – police

Nearly 50 people were injured when a vehicle ploughed through pedestrians in the UK

The ramming of a car into a crowd of football fans in Liverpool on Monday, which left at least 47 people injured, was likely not a terrorist attack, Merseyside Police have said.

The car ploughed through Liverpool Football Club’s Premier League victory parade on downtown Water Street. Police said that the driver, a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area, has been detained.

“It is vital that people do not speculate or spread misinformation on social media,” Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Jenny Sims told reporters at a press conference on Monday evening.

“We believe this to be an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it. The incident is not being treated as terrorism,” Sims said.

According to local emergency services, 20 people were treated at the scene and 27 more were hospitalized, including two with serious injuries. Four children are among the victims.
