Ilkay Gundogan scored a brace as Manchester City defeated rivals Manchester United 2-1 in the FA Cup final on Saturday.
City lifted their seventh FA Cup in club history in the first major final between the Manchester rivals. With the Premier League and FA Cup titles secured, the chance for a treble is still on ahead of a clash against Inter Milan in the Champions League final on June 10.
Gundogan shocked Wembley Stadium with the quickest goal in FA Cup final history. The City captain struck the ball on the volley from outside the box to beat United goalkeeper David De Gea 13 seconds into the match and give his team an early lead.
United were awarded a penalty in the 31st minute after a VAR check confirmed that Jack Grealish touched the ball with his hand inside the box following a header by Aaron Wan Bisaka. Bruno Fernandez stepped up to the penalty spot and brought the Red Devils level 1-1.
Gundogan added a second goal for City from a corner kick in the 51st minute. The German international completed the brace with a volley from atop the semi-circle to regain the lead.
City fans thought that Gundogan had recorded the first FA Cup final hat trick since 1953 but the midfielder was found offside as he tapped in a rebound past De Gea in the 71st minute.
United had a last gasp effort in stoppage time to tie the match when Scott McTominay headed the ball from inside the six-yard box, which deflected just over the crossbar.
City will now focus on challenging to win a first Champions League title by taking on Inter Milan at Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey.
