The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Wednesday that goaltender Matt Murray is out indefinitely and will be placed on long-term injured reserve to start the 2023-24 season.
The team did not provide specifics on Murray’s injury.
Last season, Murray had a .903 save percentage and 3.01 goals-against average while finishing with a 14-8-2 record. The 29-year-old netminder had several injury concerns over the course of the season, but did finish healthy enough to serve as the team’s backup for Games 4 and 5 of the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Murray last saw game action on April 2nd against the Detroit Red Wings, a game he left early after suffering a concussion.
With the Maple Leafs needing to free up cap space after fellow goalie Ilya Samsonov was awarded a one-year, $3.55 million deal in arbitration, many thought that Murray could be a buyout candidate for Toronto.
Toronto acquired Murray and a third-round draft pick in the 2023 NHL Draft from the Senators last off-season in exchange for future considerations.
Murray is headed into the final year of a four-year, $25 million contract he signed with the Ottawa Senators. As part of his acquisition last summer, $4.69 million of his $6.25 AAV counts against the Maple Leafs’ cap, while the Senators have the remaining $1.56 million on their books.
Murray won two Stanley Cups during his time with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
