Maple Leafs, Oilers not in on Chychrun as Coyotes hold defenceman out of lineup

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers are not in on Jakob Chychrun, Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek reported after the Arizona Coyotes made the defenceman a healthy scratch Saturday for trade-related reasons.

“We’ve been told definitely ‘no’ it’s not the Oilers, the Toronto Maple Leafs have said ‘no’ it’s not them,” Marek said during the 32 Thoughts segment on Hockey Night in Canada. “The (Los Angeles) Kings are pouring cold water on this one, and I’m not saying that’s not true, but let’s keep in mind tonight is Dustin Brown night in Los Angeles … so we’ll see where this one goes.

“There is no guarantee as well that Chychrun gets moved tonight, the Arizona Coyotes after tonight don’t play until Monday against the Nashville Predators.”

Chychrun, 24, has spent his entire seven-year NHL career with the Coyotes after being drafted 16th overall by the club in 2016. He has seven goals and 28 points in 36 games this season.

Chychrun has been the subject of trade rumours for more than a year and has previously been linked to interest from the Maple Leafs, Oilers, Kings and Boston Bruins.

The Boca Raton, Fla., native is under contract through the 2024-25 campaign with a cap hit of $4.6 million in each of the next two seasons.

The NHL trade deadline is 3 p.m. ET on March 3.
