The ‘Shanaplan’ did not lead to a Stanley Cup for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Team president Brendan Shanahan’s contract will not be renewed, the Maple Leafs announced on Thursday.
The move comes after the Leafs suffered a 6-1 loss to the visiting Florida Panthers in Game 7 of a second-round playoff series on Sunday. The Leafs also lost 6-1 in Game 5 at Scotiabank Arena, and the team was booed by Toronto fans in both games.
The Leafs granted permission for the New York Islanders to speak to Shanahan about a role with the club on Wednesday, raising speculation that his decade-plus association with the club could end.
