Maple Leafs play University of Toronto G Alexander for final 1:10 vs. Habs

With the Toronto Maple Leafs leading 7-1 on Saturday, the team put in University of Toronto goalie Jett Alexander for the final 1:10 against the Montreal Canadiens.

Alexander was signed to an amateur tryout offer earlier in the day to back up Ilya Samsonov.

No goals were scored the rest of the way as the Leafs won 7-1.

The Leafs did not have another goalie with Matt Murray injured and Joseph Woll sent back to the AHL Marlies.

The 23-year-old Alexander, from Bloomfield, Ont., attends the U of T and posted a 12-7-2 record, 2.22 goals-against average and .927 save percentage in 22 games with the Varsity Blues this season.

He served as an emergency backup for the Colorado Avalanche when they visited the Maple Leafs on Dec. 2, 2021. Alexander did not play as he remained in the dressing room until Colorado’s Justus Annunen arrived for the second period.

Samsonov appeared to be favouring his lower body seven minutes into the second period after sliding across the crease while attempting to make a save.

He remained in the game and chatted with head athletic therapist Paul Ayotte during a TV timeout moments later.

Samsonov sustained a knee injury against the Boston Bruins in November during a penalty shot from Brad Marchand.

The Edmonton Oilers pulled off a similar move earlier this year, putting in University of Alberta goalie Matt Berlin for the end of a blowout win over the Chicago Blackhawks.
