Maple Leafs starting Woll against Lightning, Samsonov unavailable

Joseph Woll will start in goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Lighting after a complicated cap situation prevented the Maple Leafs from calling up Woll Monday.

General manager Kyle Dubas said Ilya Samsonov is unavailable for the game with an undisclosed injury and is not expected to play in Thursday’s season finale against the New York Rangers, either.

Goaltender Matt Onuska of the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires will be signed to an amateur try-out contract and back-up Woll Tuesday, marking the third-consecutive game the Leafs have had to employ an amateur in goal.

The Leafs also announced that Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and Mark Giordano will all sit out as the team visits Amalie Arena.

Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe will operate with one player short, at 11 forwards and six defencemen.
