McIlroy beats out Thomas, Finau to win back-to-back Canadian Open titles

Rory McIlroy defended his Canadian Open title on Sunday at St. George’s Golf and Country Club in Toronto, claiming a two-stroke victory at an event he won in 2019, but was cancelled for two years because of the pandemic.

McIlroy gave up the lead on the 16th hole to playing partner Justin Thomas, but the Northern Irishman responded by knocking his second shot on the 17th within four feet and putted for birdie. Thomas had gone wide with his drive and had to settle for bogey.

Thomas finished in third place, while fellow American Tony Finau took second with a birdie putt on the 18th, to finish two strokes back.

McIlroy finished the event at 19-under, carding a final round 62. Fans at St. George’s pushed through the ropes and surrounded the 18th green for the final putts, causing some delays as the golfers waited for them to settle down.

Justin Rose had the round of the day with a 60, to finish at 14 under.

More to come.
