Is it just me or is H&M absolutely knocking it out of the park this winter? I recently did a huge order from their new season collection thinking I would be sending most of it back once I’d seen it in real life, but the quality and fits really impressed me. Since then, it feels like every time I open the new-in page the pieces get better and better, and my wish list gets longer and longer.
The thing that H&M seems to be getting so right is that all its new winter pieces are seriously expensive-looking. Obviously, the fabrics and design details aren’t up to quite the same standards as the luxury versions, but I have been noticing H&M making more of an effort with these elements, and it’s no coincidence that the brand’s best pieces (IMO) are often found in the Premium Selection which focuses on better silhouettes and improved textiles. This may mean spending a little more than you would expect for your average H&M buy, but the added quality and longevity you’ll get in return surely makes it worthwhile (not to mention, better for the planet).
Which leads me to fill you in on my latest winning H&M find: the Oversized Wool-Blend Coat. This piece honestly made me gasp when I saw it appear during my daily H&M check in, and I almost couldn’t believe my eyes. Minimalist, slouchy, buttery soft and in the most rich-looking colour you can wear for autumn: camel. Heaven—and yes, you can bet I took it straight to the checkout before you all make it sellout within hours. No one, and I mean no one you encounter when wearing this is going to believe it’s from H&M (but everyone’s going to ask where you got it). It also comes in a smart grey, a classic colour we saw all over the AW23 catwalks. As the name suggests, it does look oversized (although the model is wearing a Medium), so I sized down with that in mind—but I do think a slightly exaggerated silhouette is actually the key to making high street buys look more elevated and designer-like.
What makes it a great purchase at this point in the year is that due to it’s cropped hem, you’ll get plenty of wear out of it during the spring months when your full-length winter coat feels too cumbersome and high-coverage.
