Nuggets defeat Heat to claim first NBA title in franchise history

The Denver Nuggets downed the Miami Heat 94-89 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to grab their first Larry O’Brien Trophy in franchise history.

The Nuggets trailed the Heat for most of the opening three quarters but bounced back in the fourth to celebrate in front of their home fans at Ball Arena.

Nikola Jokic continued Denver’s run to basketball dominance posting 28 points and 16 rebounds. Micheal Porter Jr. added 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Jamal Murray, who picked up 14 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, entered a select club by becoming only the ninth Canadian to win an NBA title.

The Kitchener, Ont. native joined Mike Smrek (Los Angeles Lakers, 1987, ’88), Bill Wennington (Chicago, 1996. ’97, ’98), Rick Fox (Lakers, 2000, ’01, ’02), Joel Anthony (Miami, 2012, ’13), Cory Joseph (San Antonio, 2014), Tristan Thompson (Cleveland, 2016), Chris Boucher (Golden State 2018, Toronto 2019) and Andrew Wiggins (Golden State 2022).
