OHL expected to announce 2020-21 season shutdown amid COVID-19 pandemic

The OHL, the lone Canadian major junior league not to begin a 2020-21 season, is expected to announce the shutdown of its 2020-21 campaign on Tuesday amid a third wave of COVID-19 in Ontario, Sportsnet has learned.

The news comes a day after the WHL revealed it would not be able to host a playoffs, following a 24-game regular season, due to the pandemic.

Ontario’s minister of sport, Lisa MacLeod, said last week that it’s “irresponsible” to approve a return to play for the OHL right now.

MacLeod said prior to the start of the third wave, the government of Ontario had been days away from approving the league’s plan for its 2020-21 season.

On April 7, Premier Doug Ford announced a stay-at-home order to try and slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The OHL has been shelved since mid-March of last year, when it cancelled the remaining 56 games of the 2019-20 regular season due to the pandemic.
