The Edmonton Oilers are headed back to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2006.
Edmonton defeated the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference Dallas Stars 2-1 in Game 6 on Sunday and will now take on the Florida Panthers in the 2023-24 Cup Final.
The Oilers will have a chance to bring a sixth championship home to Edmonton. Their last title came in 1990, while their last trip to the Cup Final in 2006 ended with a loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in seven games.
Connor McDavid got things started for the Oilers in Game 6 with a jaw-dropping power-play goal in the first period when he dangled around multiple Stars players before lifting one past Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger.
Zach Hyman would add another power-play goal for the Oilers later in the first to give the home team a 2-0 lead.
The Stars finally got on the board in the third period when Mason Marchment was the first to solve Stuart Skinner thanks to a nice bounce off the end boards. But it was too little too late and the Oilers would hang on for the win.
Edmonton also extended its franchise-record penalty kill streak to 28 in Game 6, killing another three penalties Sunday.
Edmonton will now enjoy five days off before they head to Florida to take on the Panthers in Game 1 on Saturday. All games can be seen on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.
