Here at Who What Wear, we spend a lot of time talking about where to shop, which trends to buy into, and the specific designer and high-street pieces that have caught our attention. But do you ever wonder which items actually make it into our editors’ wardrobes?
If the answer is yes, you’ll be happy to hear that I’ve found out exactly what my colleagues will be buying this season—and which looks they’ll be passing on. My main take-away? They’re a particular bunch and they like what they like. And I love that. It’s an important reminder that fashion is incredibly individual, and what appeals to the masses won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. From one editor’s rejection of a huge 2023 trend to another’s avoidance of a specific denim style, you might be surprised by my findings.
But one thing is for sure: each of these fashion experts has a great eye. You can expect impeccable tailoring, directional denim, outfit-making accessories and so much more on their wish lists. In fact, my own wish list has doubled in size since seeing the pieces our editors rate. You’ve been warned. Read on to find out what’s on their radar for the year ahead.
“I’ll be passing on anything see-through as complex layering is not my forte, and it would require too much effort and time to work out. Instead, I’ll be revisiting the basics I need in my wardrobe as it’s been a long time since I hit refresh on the essentials, and SS23 is nothing if not a good time for tailoring and minimalism!” — Hannah Almassi, Editor-in-Chief
“Don’t get me wrong, I won’t be getting rid of my beloved straight-leg jeans—they’ll always be a classic I turn to in times of need. But for 2023 I plan on investing in more elevated wide-leg and flared jean styles which, worn with a heel or boot, lengthen my shorter legs and make any outfit look a bit more polished. “For the past few seasons I’ve worked really hard at turning my wardrobe into the perfect capsule, favouring clean lines and timeless items over anything that felt too trendy. In doing so I’ve managed to get considerably more wear out of the pieces I have invested in, but I do feel like I’ve lost a little bit of myself in the process. As someone who brought into the puff-sleeve, nap dress trend first time around, this nostalgic fashion mood is something I’m keen to revisit in 2023. “I’ve always been a fan of dresses. Any shape, style or colour does it for me, really. I’m not fussy! However, this year I’ll be swapping out my much loved mini dresses for impactful maxi iterations. And, after seeing plenty of styles on the runway for spring/summer 2023 (notably at Bally, ACNE, Victoria Beckham and Giambattista Valli ), I’ll also be hoping for an occasion to wear a dress with a show-stopping train. “Anyone who knows me will tell you I’ve had a long love affair with loafers. There’s really no situation where I won’t wear them—work, dinner, drinks, running errands—it’s miraculous to me that they can go from casual to chic by simply swapping jeans for a dress. This being said, since I bought a pair of clogs, I’ve found my loafers to look a little lonely at the back of my shoe cupboard. I love how ’70s they look with denim or a maxi dress, and if you have a pair with studs, they go so well with leather too.
