Panthers stun Presidents’ Trophy winning Bruins, to face Maple Leafs in Round 2

The ultimate upset is complete.

After a record-setting 65-win regular season, the Boston Bruins were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Sunday after a 4-3 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers in Game 7.

Carter Verhaeghe played the hero for the Panthers, scoring the series-clinching goal in the extra period

With the loss, the Bruins became just the second Presidents’ Trophy winners in the past 10 seasons to be eliminated in the first round, joining the Tampa Bay Lightning who were upset by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2019.

The Panthers secured the Eastern Conference’s final playoff spot with 92 points, 43 points less than the league-leading Bruins.

With the win, the Panthers book a date with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second round. The Maple Leafs won their first playoff series since 2004 by defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.

More to come.
