Penguins completing trade with Sharks for defenceman Erik Karlsson

Erik Karlsson is heading to the Pittsburgh Penguins with the San Jose Sharks finally completing the deal Sunday with the reigning Norris Trophy winner on Sunday, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports.

The 33-year-old Swede earned the title of the league’s top defenceman for the third time in his career after tallying up 101 points (25 goals, 76 assists) last season.

Karlsson was drafted 15th overall by the Ottawa Senators in 2008. He earned the Norris Trophy in 2012 and 2015 during his tenure in Ottawa.

The Senators traded Karlsson to the Sharks in September 2018. He signed an eight-year contract with San Jose worth $92 million, with a cap hit of $11.5 million, in June 2019.

Karlsson scored a total of 52 goals and racked up 188 assists during his five seasons in San Jose.
