Long-time NHL executive and Sportsnet broadcaster Brian Burke is joining the Pittsburgh Penguins as president of hockey operations.
Burke joins the Penguins front office alongside Ron Hextall, who joins the organization as the club’s new general manager.
The Penguins’ GM position had became available as a result of Jim Rutherford, who’d served in the role since 2014, deciding to move on from the organization in late January after a run that brought two Stanley Cups to Pittsburgh.
Burke most recently served as president of hockey operations for the Calgary Flames before joining Sportsnet. Prior to his Alberta tenure, he served as general manager for the Hartford Whalers, Vancouver Canucks, Anaheim Ducks, and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Hextall joins the Penguins after having served as general manager for the rival Philadelphia Flyers, as well as assistant general manager for the Los Angeles Kings.
The Penguins currently sit fifth in the East Division, with a 5-5-1 record through 11 games this season.
