Tristan Jarry of the Pittsburgh Penguins scored the 17th goalie goal in NHL history Thursday night.
Jarry fired the puck into an empty net to give the Penguins a 4-2 lead late in the third period against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
“It was pretty lucky,” Jarry told reporters after the game. “It’s pretty neat, honestly. It’s something that doesn’t happen very often. There’s very few that have done it, so it’s something definitely pretty cool, but honestly, the win means more.”
Jarry, who became the first Penguins netminder credited with a goal, also made 39 saves in the victory.
“It was just kind of the perfect scenario,” he said. “It was coming in kind of slow, and I was able to just get around it and shoot as hard as I could.”
Before Jarry, Linus Ullmark of the Boston Bruins was the most recent goalie to score a goal, which he accomplished on Feb. 25 against the Vancouver Canucks.
Billy Smith of the New York Islanders was the first on Nov. 28, 1979, when he was given credit for an own goal by the Colorado Rockies.
Jarry is the 14th different netminder to score a goal in the NHL. Martin Brodeur had three in his career while Ron Hexall scored twice.
Jarry has scored one other time during his professional career — recording a goal with the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in 2018.
