People Say I Have Impeccable Taste—Here Are 40 New Pieces I Love Now

The New Year is here and it’s that time of the month when I round up my current favourite pieces on the web. There’s no denying that trawling January sales is exhilarating, however, between last season’s picks and the remanence of Christmas sparkle, it’s a notoriously difficult time to ascertain what’s truly worthy of a place in your wardrobe. Although I thought there would be a real lack in January, I’ve found many timeless pieces that have caught my attention of late.

As opposed to the more is more sentiment that comes with dressing over the Christmas and New Year’s period, now we’re in the back-to-work and back-to-school mode, with more classic clothing choices and elevated essentials taking centre stage (although there’s still room for fun). Feather trims have migrated to jacket collars, and vinyl dresses have been swapped out for lacquered outerwear.

Avalon wears the Arket Wool Cape. Keep your eyes peeled for returns.

Most of us see January as an exciting fresh start, and one that often brings about thoughts of wardrobe clear-outs, trying new things or re-establishing personal style. It’s also time for plenty of newness and the initiation of fresh brands into our repertoire: New names to know are emerging, in addition to brand-new colourways of highly coveted items (Think that cult Totême scarf coat, which is now available in grey marl and sage).

If, like me, you work from home, you may also be nesting and lusting over silken PJs, linen robes, and slippers. But along with cosy at-home basics, this January I’m also heavily reliant on accessories and standout outerwear pieces that bring a playful element to winter dressing. And if the new-in-selections are anything to go by, we’re in for a good fashion year, with everything from overstated silhouettes, saturated hues and full skirts among the classic shapes and cuts popping up in some of my favourite brands’ latest collections. As always, some niche brands have piqued my interest, so I’ve peppered those in for you, too.

So, if you’re looking for fashion inspo for the year ahead, scroll down to discover my 40-piece curated edit of the best items out there worth investing in now. Enjoy!

The rounded shoulders and nipped waist make this jacket look incredibly premium. Pair this with a column maxi skirt and fancy pumps – maybe even belt it, depending on the occasion.

We haven’t yet seen the last of the scarf coat. If anything, I think it’s just the beginning. Totême’s infamous whipstitch coat now comes in this stunning sage hue. PS, it’s also restocked in the black again!

I’ve had the pleasure of trying on Stellar 79’s demi-fine jewellery and it is every bit as special in real life. This astronomical inspired ring (with delicate star engraving) is inspired by the twinkle in a night’s sky.

Have you seen anything more perfect? Especially considering the current weather.

COS released a similar silhouette, and it flew off the shelves in record time. Arket followed suit with this streamlined coat in a stunning oatmeal hue.

The Caitlin boot is new in my wardrobe and to say I’m excited to christen them is an understatement. With the western characteristics, jaunty heel, and stitching – it’s a classic style, albeit with a sleek, modern feel.

Tove’s take on the scarf coat is exquisite in every way. Crafted from 100% lambswool and with fabric-covered buttons, this is a special piece. The style may be influenced by a trend, but this is a forever piece.

I can never resist a puff sleeve, especially when it’s offered in organza *chefs kiss*

We’re still riding the wave of resin and I’m certainly not complaining. It adds a modern vibe to classic knitwear. Pair it with a taupe knit to add a modern lilt.

The festivities may be over, but I can’t get this dress out of my mind. If you’re in two minds about the investment, it’s also available for rental.

Roger Vivier’s pumps are worn all over Paris, come rain or shine.

When it comes to skirts – the bigger the better. As seen on e-com this voluminous skirt works well with fitted tops tucked into the waistband. Prop this look up with slingback heels – et voila! You’ll see many more full skirts this season.

You may be familiar with TOMS for their cult Alpargata styles, but they also create weather-proof and indoor footwear. Case in point – these fuzzy slippers. When the temperature hits minus, nothing but fleeced insoles will do.

If you prefer feminine shaping like me, you’ll appreciate the rounded shoulders and raglan sleeves on this knit. This is also the perfect grown-up shade of grey.

Although this coat is very trendy, it’s also a timeless piece you can don every winter.

Winter is the perfect time to experiment with accessories and 2022 was the year of the silk scarf. As seen on e-com, you can layer this delicate fabric over woollen outerwear to juxtapose the textures. This is 100% silk, too.

I can never give up dresses and skirts, so when winter comes around, I opt for heavy bias cuts, longer hemlines, and deeper hues. You can always layer thermals underneath.

Although Dôen is best associated with whimsical cottagecore styles, this pointelle dress is a transitional piece you can wear through to spring.

Skims shook up the fashion world last year and judging by the popularity of Onyx, I have a feeling this two-piece will be a popular contender. It’s one of the chicest at-home pieces I’ve seen.

Minimalists look no further than this elevated piece. It might not look like much on the hanger, however, it’s a sculpted and flattering fit thanks to the pleat detail.

Keep your eyes peeled on the Outnet for last season’s pieces. I still remember this Toteme piece pop up on Net last year and I was delighted to find it here heavily discounted.

I’m a big fan of organic textiles and textures. Pair these earrings with a crisp white shirt and denim and take a classic look to new heights.

If I didn’t already own a leather blazer this would be high up on my list.

Although striped knits are becoming increasingly popular, neutral knits with black/blue stripes are quite scarce. This is hot in at & Other Stories, and I have a feeling this designer-like knit will fly off the shelves.

If you haven’t yet heard of Lampoo allow me to kindly introduce you. The re-sale site features a plethora of high-quality (and many hardly worn) designer goods. On my latest peruse of the site, I spotted these stunning Dior Slingbacks.

It’s officially nesting season and I’m yet to see a chicer at-home set.

If you’re after ’90s-style vintage jeans this pair by Nudie Jeans looks authentic. Not only are they a sustainable and inclusive brand, but they also craft the perfect high-rise straight-leg jeans that are reminiscent of the highly coveted Levi 501 style.

I’m holding onto feather applique season for dear life. Pop a slouchy round-neck jumper on top for an evening look.

Drop bursts of this ochre shade into your winter wardrobe to brighten things up. Add dark brown boots to complete the look.

The boat neckline and contrasted back tie make this top extra special (it’s sustainably made, too)

A silky crook-of-your-arm handbag is my new favourite winter accessory.

This is aptly named the Brontë dress because to me it’s the 2023 version of the Wuthering Heights frock. Romantic, floaty and a little bit sultry.

From the almond-shaped toe to the exposed stitching and glossy lacquer, it’s a boot to rival the rest.

Between the cognac colourway and the jaunty double border, this is a truly special piece. I’d wear it tied around the handle of a vintage-style bag.

It’s very seldom that tailored trousers come in luxe fabrications but LR.D have crafted this piece from wool and cashmere. It’s made to last forever.

What started as an understated accessory has now become a power item thanks to Loewe’s Obi belt. Cinch in any oversized dress with this statement belt.

By Malene Birger is the brand of the moment and it’s no surprise with directional pieces like this. Modest and oh-so chic.

The colour and silhoutte are perfect.

I adore Charles Keith’s take on the mary-jane. The pointed toe and circular buckle loan a 60’s style to this shoe. It’s also easy to wear, as opposed to the heeled variations.

Matteau is hands down one of my favourite resortwear brands and the relevance of their pieces (cleverly) trickle into spring wear – weather pending. The ruched waistband detail is stunning.
