Phillies defeat Padres in Game 5 to clinch NL pennant, World Series berth

The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the San Diego Padres 4-3 in Game 5 of the NLCS on Sunday afternoon to clinch the National League pennant and the franchise’s first World Series berth since 2009.

Bryce Harper hit a two-run, go-ahead home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the Phillies ahead.

Philadelphia will play the winner of the American League Championship Series between the Houston Astros and New York Yankees. The Astros hold a 3-0 advantage in the series with Game 4 scheduled for Sunday night at Yankee Stadium but could be postponed and rescheduled to Monday if weather conditions don’t improve.

More to come.
