Joe Burrow is now the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL after agreeing to a five-year, $275 million extension with the Cincinnati Bengals, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.
Burrow’s deal includes $219.01 million guaranteed and makes him the highest-paid player in NFL history.
The 26-year-old threw for 4,475 yards, a career-high 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions last season. He also led the Bengals to the AFC Championship game for a second consecutive year.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft still has two years remaining on his rookie contract, but the Bengals have now ensured they are keeping their franchise quarterback around long-term.
The Bengals have seen a dramatic turnaround since drafting Burrow — going from the NFL’s worst team in 2019, when they finished the season with two wins, to reaching the Super Bowl in 2021.
Burrow’s record-setting deal comes after top NFL quarterbacks received new contracts. The Los Angeles Chargers signed Justin Herbert to a five-year deal that averages $52.5 million a year, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts ($51 million) and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson ($52 million) also signed lucrative extensions that made them briefly the highest-paid in the league.
