Report: Blue Jays fire manager Charlie Montoyo

The Toronto Blue Jays have fired manager Charlie Montoyo, according to multiple reports.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was the first to report the news.

The team is 46-42 this season and is clinging to the third and final wild-card spot in the American League.

The Blue Jays had lost nine of 10 before opening a homestand with a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.

The Blue Jays hired Montoyo as manager after the 2018 season. He was previously bench coach for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Montoyo inherited a rebuilding team in 2019 and finished 67-95.

In 2020, the Blue Jays had to play home games in Buffalo, N.Y. because of border restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Toronto finished 32-28 and made the expanded playoffs as the eighth seed in the shortened season before losing to Tampa Bay in the first round.

In 2021, the Blue Jays opened the season playing home games in Dunedin, Fla., and Buffalo before returning to Toronto in the summer.

The Blue Jays finished 91-71, missing the playoffs by one game.

More to come.
