Could the Anaheim Ducks be starting their off-season shopping early?
The Ducks are reportedly in advanced talks with the New York Rangers on a deal that would send veteran forward Chris Kreider to Anaheim, according to Daily Faceoff‘s Frank Seravalli.
Seravalli reported that there is no deal as of Tuesday night, but a framework for the trade has been discussed, which centred around forward prospect Carey Terrance.
Sportsnet sources confirmed that more will be known about the deal Wednesday morning.
Terrance was a second-round pick of the Ducks in 2023. This past season, he scored 20 goals and 39 points over 45 games for the OHL’s Erie Otters.
Kreider has been one of the NHL’s most consistent goal scorers over his 13-year career with the Rangers. He has found the back of the net 20 or more times in seven straight seasons and in 10 of the last 11.
In 2024-25, the 34-year-old scored 22 goals and registered eight assists over 68 games as New York missed the post-season. Kreider missed time during the regular season due to an upper-body injury.
Kreider enters 2025-26 in the sixth year of a seven-year, $45.5 million contract signed in 2020. The deal carries an annual average value of $6.5 million.
Seravalli reported that the Ducks would likely take on the rest of Kreider’s contract in full.
His best season came in 2021-22, when the left-shot winger buried 52 goals in 81 games.
Kreider was originally drafted out of Boston College 19th overall by the Rangers in 2009 and made his NHL debut in the 2012-13 campaign.
He would bring 123 games of playoff experience to a young Ducks team, having helped New York play for the Stanley Cup in 10 separate seasons. In those post-season trips, Kreider has 48 goals and 76 points. He scored five goals in New York’s trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2013-14.
Anahiem is coming off a 2024-25 season in which it missed the playoffs with 80 points. In early May, the Ducks hired Joel Quenneville to take over as the 12th head coach in franchise history.
The Ducks feature a young forward group, which includes the likes of Mason McTavish, Leo Carlsson and Cutter Gauthier — all of whom breached the 20-goal threshold last season.
