Progress on the deal, Romano noted, means that Manchester City is “completely out of the negotiations” for Ronaldo. City had been offered the chance to sign Ronaldo and, while a move was reportedly considered, the team decided not to move forward because of the financial hurdles involved in the deal, according to ESPN correspondent Rob Dawson.
One of the most recognizable and storied names in modern soccer, Ronaldo had one year left on his deal with Juventus, his former club, heading into this transfer window.
The Serie A team, in hopes of acquiring something for the 36-year-old star before his contract expired, has been said to be seeking a £28-million transfer fee for the Portuguese striker, a potentially daunting sum given his per-week wages total £500,000.
No agreement on personal terms and a fee for Juventus are believed to have been reached at this time.
Ronaldo last played in the Premier League from 2003 to 2009 with United, scoring 118 goals in 292 games while winning three league titles and the Champions League.
In his three seasons with Juventus, Ronaldo scored 81 goals in 98 appearances, including a league-high 29 goals during the 2020-21 campaign. He is the only active player to lead the Serie A, Premier League and La Liga in scoring.
Ronaldo is also the top scorer in Champions League history with 134 goals and won the European Golden Shoe on four occasions, second only to Leo Lionel Messi, who has six.
