Report: Yankees, ace Max Fried agree to eight-year, $218M contract

Max Fried’s first trip to free agency has concluded in a lucrative deal.

The six-foot-four left-hander has come to terms on an eight-year, $218 million contract with the New York Yankees, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports.

Fried spent the first eight seasons of his major league career with the Atlanta Braves and recorded a 3.25 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over 171.4 innings last season. He made his second All-Star team and pitched in the post-season for the seventh time last year.

The 30-year-old struggled in his only playoff start, allowing five earned runs over two innings against the San Diego Padres. Fried has previously experienced success on the biggest stage. He threw six innings of shutout ball to help clinch the Braves 2021 World Series victory over the Houston Astros.

The Santa Monica, Calif. native finished in the top five in National League Cy-Young voting in both 2020 and 2022.

The southpaw boasts an extensive seven-pitch repertoire — four of which generated a positive run value according to Statcast — including a four-seam fastball that sits 94 m.p.h. and an effective slow curve.

Patrick Corbin is the only left-hander with more innings pitched than Fried since 2019.
