Scherzer set to make first start with Blue Jays today vs. Cardinals

Ace pitcher Max Scherzer will make his Toronto Blue Jays spring training debut Tuesday when they take on the St. Louis Cardinals in Dunedin, Fla.

Watch live on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+ with coverage starting at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner signed a one-year deal with the Blue Jays earlier this month.

Scherzer, who is from Chesterfield, Mo., and grew up a Cardinals fan, was limited to nine starts last season with the Texas Rangers due to injuries and finished with a 2-4 record, 3.95 ERA and 40 strikeouts.

The 40-year-old Scherzer is a two-time World Series champion, eight-time all-star and holds a career 216-112 record with a 3.16 ERA and 3,407 strikeouts over 17 seasons in the majors.

Some familiar faces will be in the starting lineup for the Blue Jays including shortstop Bo Bichette leading things off, slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the No. 3 spot and catcher Alejandro Kirk handling cleanup duties.

Bichette had two hits and one run to help the Blue Jays defeat the New York Yankees 6-4 during their spring training opener Saturday.

Toronto improved to a 2-0 mark Sunday with an 8-7 victory over the Boston Red Sox thanks to a six-run ninth inning.

The Blue Jays were scheduled to face the Detroit Tigers on Monday, however, the game was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The rainout forced Blue Jays manager John Schneider to alter his pitching plans. Bowden Francis, who was slated to start against Detroit, will follow Scherzer against the Cardinals.

St. Louis is out to a 1-2 start in spring training.
