Senators trade DeBrincat to Red Wings for Kubalik, Sebrango and picks

The Ottawa Senators have traded forward Alex DeBrincat to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for forward Dominik Kubalik, prospect defenceman Donovan Sebrango, a conditional 2024 first-round draft pick and Detroit’s 2024 fourth-round selection, the team announced Sunday.

A trade had been expected after the Senators filed for arbitration with DeBrincat and it was reported by Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch that he did not want to sign an extension to stay in Ottawa.

Upon acquiring DeBrincat, the Red Wings signed the 25-year-old Michigan native to a four-year contract extension with an AAV of $7,875,000.

DeBrincat had 27 goals and 39 assists for 66 points in 82 games in 2022-23, his first year with the Senators.

Those numbers were down from the previous season, when DeBrincat had 41 goals and 37 assists for 78 points with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Senators acquired DeBrincat last summer from the Blackhawks for first-, second- and third-round picks.
