The end of an era.
Serena Williams’ iconic tennis career officially came to an end with a loss to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-1 in the third round at the U.S. Open Friday.
In early August, Williams announced she was — in her words — transitioning away from her playing career after more than two decades as one of the most dominant players in tennis history.
The 23-major champion said the U.S. Open would be her final event and was feted by players and fans leading up to the event. But then when she arrived, she kept winning, extending the goodbye into a full-week celebration.
Now, a legend moves on. And the WTA enters a new era.
