Celebrities just love “naked” dresses, don’t they? While this aesthetic might seem a little much for one’s weekly food shop, in the A-list world sheer dresses are par for the course no matter the occasion, time of year of levels of appropriateness. Sometimes, the whole barely-wearing-anything look can veer into tacky territory, but not in the hands of fashion’s favourite darling, Sienna Miller.
In many eyes, the actress can do no wrong when it comes to her outfit choices both casual or red carpet-ready. Last night’s outfit is yet further proof of how she can apply her relaxed, get-dressed-and-go attitude to even the most daring of items. Her floral-embroidered, lace and chiffon dress was also a very good example of how chic this ongoing trend can actually be; ethereal, soft, subtle… there is a way to do see-through fabrics with class. The simple spaghetti-strapped shoulders and slip-like silhouette help make the gossamer-thin fabric feel a little more minimalist and slinky rather than overly sassy, and the pretty caped back adds a formal touch. Combined with matching silver strappy sandals (also flourished with mini flowers) this is giving Midsummer Night’s Dream rather than anything overtly va-va-voom. With the Met Gala coming up on the first Monday in May, can we expect to see a lot more of this kind of look from the celebrity set? I think so!
Sheer dresses continue to be a popular runway trend as we head into the realms of autumn/winter 2023, which looks set to be a charged season with everything from patent domintrax looks through to prettier tulle concoctions that play peekaboo on the underwear front. There are some safer styling ideas for tapping into the look, should you want to. A sheer dress can be great layered over a slip, jeans or (if you’re feeling a little daring) more generously cut lingerie. Keep scrolling for a few shopping pieces that provide daytime inspiration.
