Sofia Richie Wore the 'Dated' Trend That's All Over the Runways and High Street

By now it seems pretty clear that 2023 is the year of Sofia Richie. Ever since she began sharing her pre-wedding outfits a few months ago, all eyes have been on the quiet-luxury aesthetic that she’s been channelling through her classic looks. Each time there’s a new post, we’re taking note, and her latest look is displaying the return of an accessory trend we weren’t expecting: waist belts.

Sofia wears a Maje dress, Ralph Lauren belt and Maje bag.

In the early 2000s, it seemed no outfit was completely without a bold statement belt. And though some of this style has threatened return over the past few seasons with low-waist, diamante and medallion styles popping up alongside the Y2K return, it’s the new iteration that we’re truly focused on. Statement in size, but refined in look, the fresh take is understated yet impactful. And we’ve spotted the waist belt in pride of place on the runways, from Carolina Herrera’s resort collection to Alaïa’s Couture show just days ago.

The fresh way to wear a waist belt is clear: stick to neutrals and keep it simple. Richie makes perfect evidence of this, with a contrast stitch black dress and iconic fringed Maje bag in hand. It’s not just the designer brands that have honed in on this recent trend, our high-street heroes are already serving up plenty of affordable takes on the style.
