After winning a medal of each colour at the Beijing Olympics, long-track speed skater Isabelle Weidemann will carry Canada’s flag at the Closing Ceremony for the Beijing Olympics on Sunday.
The Canadian Olympic Committee confirmed the choice of the Ottawa native at the start of the final day of the Beijing Games.
Weidemann won the first of Canada’s 25 medals prior to the final day of competition with a bronze in the 3,000 metres on Day 1 of the Games.
The 26-year-old then took silver in the 5,000 metres and joined forces with Ivanie Blondin and Valerie Maltais to capture one of Canada’s four Beijing gold medals in the team pursuit.
The six-foot-two Weidemann will be the first long-track speedskater to be Canada’s Closing Ceremony flag-bearer since six-time Olympic medallist Cindy Klassen got the honour in Turin in 2006.
Hockey captain Marie-Philip Poulin and short-track speedskater Charles Hamelin were Canada’s flag-bearers for the Beijing Opening Ceremony. They both won gold medals.
The Closing Ceremony starts at 6:30 a.m. ET.
