Sugar Bowl postponed after New Orleans tragedy

The final College Football Playoff quarterfinal has been delayed for a day following a horrific tragedy in New Orleans.

Sugar Bowl officials announced Wednesday afternoon that the game between Notre Dame and Georgia will no longer be played Wednesday night. The game is now scheduled for Thursday night.

It was originally scheduled for Wednesday night as the final game of a quarterfinal tripleheader.

At least 10 people were killed and 35 injured when a male motorist drove a pickup truck into a crowd on famous Bourbon Street early Wednesday morning. Authorities have said the motorist’s act was intentional and the FBI is declaring it an act of terrorism.

The New Orleans Police Commissioner said earlier Wednesday the Sugar Bowl would be played as scheduled, but plans changed in the following hours.

Visitors and residents have been told to stay away from Bourbon Street ahead of the game.

The suspect in the attack is dead. Law-enforcement officials have said he was in possession of an assault rifle.
