Make it a third world record for Summer McIntosh in the span of five days.
The 18-year-old Canadian swimmer broke her own world record in the 400-metre individual medley with a time of 4:23.65 at the Canadian Swimming Trials on Wednesday.
McIntosh has been on an absolute tear at the meet in Victoria, B.C., breaking world records in the 400-metre freestyle on Saturday, then the 200-metre individual medley on Monday.
“Going into tonight, I knew it would take an extra little push if I wanted to lower [the world record]. So, happy to go best time,” McIntosh told CBC’s Devin Heroux after the race. “I think there’s still lots of room for improvement … Overall, I’m happy with the time, but I know I can go faster. But I’m excited to keep pushing this event and have room for more.”
She also set the third-fastest time in history in the 800-metre freestyle, behind only American legend Katie Ledecky.
The Toronto native is the world-record holder in three long-course events. She also holds three short-course world records in the 400-metre freestyle, 200-metre butterfly and 400-metre individual medley.
McIntosh won three gold medals and a silver at the Paris Games. She has set a goal of winning five individual medals at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The Canadian swimming trials serve as the qualifier for the country’s team for the world championships, July 26-Aug. 3 in Singapore.
