Thanks to Miranda Priestly, I Already Love Pantone's Latest Trending Colour

Ask any fashion fanatic and I bet you will find they’re able to quote at least one line from Devil Wears Prada. After all, Meryl Streep’s inimitable portrayal of Miranda Priestly left us with so many iconic quips.

However, one of the most memorable moments of the entire film is undeniably the scene in which Priestly analyses in great detail the colour of a single jumper. “What you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue,” she says. “It’s not turquoise. It’s not lapis. It’s actually cerulean.” Priestly then goes on to explain the history of the specific shade, outlining its various significant runway appearances, and of course, solidifying cerulean as a colour never to be forgotten among the fashion set.

In perhaps its second most notable pop-culture moment, this week, Pantone (the authority on all things colour) deemed cerulean one of its key shades for spring/summer 2021. The brand described the shade as “the colour of the sky on a serene, crystal clear day,” which is just as whimsical and calming as it sounds. Given the current state of the world, and the fact we’re all learning to appreciate the small things, it’s little wonder the shade of a pleasant sky is the colour we’ll be looking to for the season ahead.  If you don’t want to wait that long and feel the need to add this soothing shade to your wardrobe now, there are currently several iterations of it available online. From designer brands (Gucci’s cerulean blazer is a personal favourite of mine) to high-street labels, skyblue is readily available for autumn and beyond.
