The 7 Autumn Jacket Styles You'll See Everywhere in a Few Months' Time

Despite the scorching weather forecast autumn is just around the corner, which can only mean one thing: It’s time to start thinking about jackets. You can keep your pumpkin spiced lattes and your opaque tights—jackets are easily my favourite thing about autumn. While I already have a few trusty styles to hand that I pull out every single year, it’s been a while since I treated myself to a new jacket, so right now, I’m officially in the market for some on-trend outerwear. This, however, isn’t a purchase I’ll make lightly. This jacket will have to carry me through the foreseeable future and go with everything I already own to make it worthwhile and justifiable. I’m not asking for much, right?

Finding such a jacket requires extensive research—browsing new-in section after new-in section. Needless to say, I take shopping very seriously. And it was during these cyber travels that I realised there were seven types of jackets that kept cropping up.

From truly classic jackets making a comeback to small updates that make a big difference, I have a feeling these autumn jackets are going to define the season ahead. With styles to suit minimal aesthetics and those with an enduring penchant for cottagecore, scroll on to see the best autumn jackets.

Style Notes: An offshoot from the ’90s, the leather blazer has since proven itself to be a perennial jacket option. In 2020, Arket’s oversized iteration sold out in a matter of days, but fret not for in 2022, there are significantly more options to shop in both real and faux fabrications.

Arket produce some amazing outerwear and this blazer is evidence of that. It could quite easily pass for high-end.

A ’90s style silhouette always looks smart. Add straight leg raw-hem jeans and ankle boots to complete the look.

The craftsmanship is exquisite, so much so that it looks vintage.

Style Notes: Although the current weather forecast would have us believe otherwise, it’s about time to start thinking about small wardrobe updates. This is the best time to make autumn investments. Bomber jackets add a sports luxe feel to almost any outfit. The shell shaping adds an understated, cool-girl look to anything you throw it over the top of.

Frankie Shop has amassed a cult following and this bomber is a sought-after piece. It’s sleek, and sophisticated with just the right amount of androgyny.

This piece has the shape of a bomber jacket with a soft linen fabrication—perfect for those of us who prefer less sporty styles.

Sports luxe at its finest but you can also dress it up with heels, come the evening.

Never did I think I’d see a tweed bomber jacket but this is so wonderfully Parisian, that it just works.

Style Notes: Isn’t it incredible how a small update can make all the difference? To me, belted jackets always look more expensive, whether you opt for a blazer, shacket or shell shape.

Raey is expert at tailoring. This belted jacket has a slash feature which is a slight nod to the androgynous Scandi vibe.

It may be a ’70s style jacket but it’s a forever staple in my eyes.

A relaxed fit with the belt detail if you wish to cinch in the waist.

Style Notes: Tis’ the season to start integrating light outwear back into the fold of our wardrobe. Oversized blazers have seen quite a resurgence of late and they’re now considered a staple piece. Either worn with dresses, matching tailoring or even loungewear, it’s a piece everyone can put their stamp on.

This is a permanent piece in Arket’s collection for good reason. It really is a classic.

The Gelso range is my favourite Frankie Shop release to date. It looks soft to the touch.

The buttercup hue is the perfect colour for transitional dressing.

Style Notes: Quilted patchwork jackets are very much a thing in style circles and this year we’ve seen the demand for this style surge. There are plenty of other patchwork jackets to choose from, depending on what best suits your taste.

When florals are overtaken by paisley print then you know you’re on the road to autumn.

As we transition into cooler months airy jackets are my first port of call. You needn’t leave floral print behind with this jacket. Did I mention it’s reversible!

This embroidered jacket is so special. The sleeves are detachable, so pop a shirt underneath for a puffed vest look.

Style Notes: A biker jacket is a style that never dates. It only gets better with wear and age. The addition of a few mere hardware accents will balance out any girly looks.

Gold jewellery wearers rejoice. I can count the times that I’ve seen gold hardware on high street jackets on one hand. That changes now with this beautiful jacket!

A longline leather jacket is perfect for those of us who want a more refined look. Rest assured that it’s an investment well made as this style is timeless.

This jacket looks far more expensive than its sensible price point. I think it’ll only be better with wear.

Style Notes: Bouclé is a trend that tends to flow in and out of popularity in the fashion world, but you can always guarantee it’ll make a comeback sooner or later. And this season, it’s already making waves. Right now, stylish types are wearing it in jacket form, complete with low-slung jeans or matching skirts in the style of Clueless.

Tweed suiting had gained popularity this year, in line with the uniform trend. This jacket can easily be thrown over the top of jeans and a white t-shirt to dress up the look.

Although white tweed is a classic, the navy variation with gold adornments looks ultra-chic.

Longline tweed makes for a more streamlined look. As seen on e-commerce, it looks fabulous juxtaposed with ’70s style denim and a chunky belt.
