These Swimwear Brands Are Making Bikinis From Recycled Plastic

The conversation around fashion and sustainability is ever-evolving. While we know this industry is one of the world’s major polluters, accounting for around 10% of humanity’s greenhouse gas emissions, there are also several companies that are doing their bit to create products in a more eco-conscious way.

Particularly when it comes to swimwear, there are many brands on the market that are committed to using recycled materials, with several labels coming full-circle in creating swimwear from recycled ocean plastic, fishing nets and other industrial waste. This is all made possible through the use of Econyl, a regenerated nylon fabric made from 100% recycled materials.

From influencer favourites including Peony Swim and Fisch to high-street labels such as Arket, brands across the industry are currently using Econyl to create swimwear in myriad styles at different price points. Though, you’ll have to check the fine print if you’re looking for an Econyl swimsuit, as some brands create their entire collections in the fabric, while others only use the material for specific styles.  To quote a statistic that has been bandied around a lot over the last few years, by 2050, it is estimated that there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. Thankfully, though, there are innovative creations such as Econyl that are helping to defy this prediction. With this in mind, we put together an edit of our favourite swimsuits made from Econyl and other recycled materials and are highlighting the brands that are consciously putting sustainability at the forefront.
