Club de Foot Montreal announced on Thursday that coach Thierry Henry is stepping down from the role due to family reasons.
“It is with a heavy heart that I’ve decided to take this decision,” said Henry. “The last year has been an extremely difficult one for me personally. Due to the worldwide pandemic, I was unable to see my children. Unfortunately due to the ongoing restrictions and the fact that we will have to relocate to the U.S. again for several months will be no different. The separation is too much of a strain for me and my kids. Therefore, it is with much sadness that I must take the decision to return to London and leave CF Montréal.”
Henry isn’t the only member of the coaching staff to have stepped down recently, either. Patrice Bernier also walked away due to personal reasons.
Henry, a former French international, spent one season with Montreal where it reached the playoffs before losing 2-1 to the New England Revolution in the play-in round. It was the team’s first post-season appearance since 2016. He posted a regular-season record of 8-13-2.
It’s been a busy off-season for Montreal. The team underwent a complete rebrand from the Montreal Impact to Club de Foot Montreal. They’ve also made no less than nine player acquisitions in what’s been a massive squad overhaul.
