This Is 2021's Answer to the Throw-On Dress

Twenty-twenty was the year that comfort became our first point of call when outfit-planning, and it was out of this that the throw-on-dress obsession emerged. While the style itself was not a new phenomenon, there was something particularly timely about the ease of styling and low-maintenance appeal that this piece offered the wearer. While summer 2021 is hopefully going to be a little more sociable (crosses all fingers), this craving for practicality hasn’t gone away, and instead, it’s morphed into the humble T-shirt-dress trend.

While the idea of a T-shirt dress might sound a little childish (I certainly thought so at first), the new iteration feels unexpectedly refined, perhaps due to the fact that premium brands such as The Row have been embracing similarly oversize silhouettes with lo-fi cotton and jersey fabrics. On the high street, meanwhile, it’s been COS leading the charge with its heavyweight T-shirt dresses that skim the body and offer a distinctively clean-lined finish. You can of course embrace classically minimalist monochromes and neutrals, but there’s something very 2021 about the pops of colour that we’re seeing right now. Think Barbie pink, soft sage and pea green. They essentially offer a fun alternative to the classic statement prints that proliferate in the warmer months. It’s extroverted dressing for minimalist dressers. Just add Birkenstocks and gold hoops, and you’re good to go. So if you loved last year’s throw-on-dress trend, scroll down to see and shop the comfy T-shirt dresses that I’m loving right now.
