This Is How My Favourite Fashion People Make Their Houses Look So Chic

When you decide to redecorate, whether you’re in a rented place or one you own, it can feel overwhelming. For months, I have been saving random images, screenshots and torn out pictures from home design magazines to get a good idea of what I want my house to look like. It’s fun, of course, but it’s also starting to get a bit confusing about what I really want. Happily, it turns out there are plenty of fashion influencers who have recently redecorated or just have impeccable taste when it comes to interiors and who I’m stealing ideas from.

There’s Laura Jackson, who has the most exceptional eye for detail when it comes to finding just the right vintage piece—she has a more maximalist style but it feels super homey. Then there’s the opposite in the form of a more minimalist approach championed by Monikh Dale and Brittany Bathgate. Here, you’ll find every home-design rule I’ve learnt from following these influencers (as well as a few others), and which pieces are guaranteed to add a bit of extra oomph to your home…

I’m starting with the hardest first, because bathrooms can be so difficult to decorate. You want it to be a place of serenity, but that doesn’t mean you have to stick to the classic white. Take a tip from Laura Jackson and add in plants, candles and prints to give it more life.

Erica Davies has the most incredible hallway. Whether that’s opting for dark doors to give the entrance drama or adding tall plants to make it feel taller and more spacious, there are plenty of tips to glean here.

A sumptuous sofa is so important. You’ll be spending so much time on it, after all. Opt for a velvet in a pink or a deep colour to give the area a very homely feel.

Like bathrooms, kitchens and dining areas are in danger of being a little boring. Follow Brittany Bathgate’s lead and go for contrasting colours—I love her green-and-white kitchen. As for the dining area, try a printed tablecloth and invest in glassware that feels fun but grown-up.

It’s cliché, but it’s true: To make a real difference to the space, you want to invest in soft furnishings. Personally, I’m all about a great rug (see Lucy Williams’s home), dramatic curtains or a bold-printed cushion.

While this isn’t for everyone, a full-length mirror for those of us who work in fashion is a must. There are plenty around, so all you need to decide is which one.
