This Pattern Is Still Trending for Summer 2021

I don’t need to tell you gingham isn’t exactly a groundbreaking print. If you went to primary school in the UK and wore a dress, you almost definitely wore a version of it at some point. The print loved by Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz has, unsurprisingly, been around for centuries. It’s thought to have originated in Southeast Asia and was later seen in the 18th century in mills in Manchester. But it’s no longer just a twee preppy print associated with school-girl pinafores—it can now fit into any wardrobe.

In the fashion world, gingham (like polka dots and florals) rolls around every summer. It’s why it’s always a good idea to invest in the print as you’ll wear it for so many summers to come. But don’t start yawning yet, because 2021’s take on the print is one of the more exciting we’ve seen in a while. There are bold green dresses and fun black-and-white checked jumpsuits. But there are also just touches of the print in handbags, shoes and accessories. Keep scrolling to see how to wear gingham in 2021 and shop the key pieces.

Style Notes: Good news if you love wearing gingham up top as there are so many different styles to choose from right now. From shirts with oversized collars to those with short sleeves, there are puffed sleeve tops too that have caught our attention.

Style Notes: One of the people I always turn to when it comes to gingham on the bottom is Nnenna Echem. Whether you go for a bold colour or just a classic black gingham, there are plenty of options.

Style Notes: Not totally convinced by the trend? Take a tip from Abi and just add a touch of the print to your outfit. Choose from shoes, bags or a crop top to liven up your summer looks.

Style Notes: Up for a head-to-toe look? Good news, there are suits, dresses and jumpsuits that are everywhere right now.
