The shooter, 17-year-old Dylan Butler, was a student at Perry High School in Iowa
A 17-year-old student at Perry High School in Iowa shot six people at the school before turning the gun on himself, police told reporters on Thursday. One victim, a sixth-grader, died at the scene, while four other students and an administrator were hospitalized.
Authorities also located and “rendered safe” an “improvised explosive device” during a subsequent search of the school, police said.
Police were called to the scene at 7:37am local time ahead of the start of classes on what would have been students’ first day back from winter break. “School didn’t start yet, luckily, luckily so there was very few students and faculty in the building, which I think contributed to a good outcome in that sense,” Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante told the media.
