Volpe’s grand slam helps Yankees extend World Series with Game 4 win over Dodgers

Anthony Volpe provided the New York Yankees with the big swing they have been looking for with a grand slam in the third inning to lift his team to a World Series-extending 11-4 Game 4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The bottom of New York’s order provided the offence the Yankees had been sorely lacking through the first three games of the series, as Volpe, Austin Wells and Alex Verdugo combined to go 5-for-10 with two home runs. The trio also drove in seven Yankees runs.

Los Angeles seemed to be on its way to a series sweep early on when Freddie Freeman launched a record-breaking homer to take a 2-0 in the top of the first. However, the Dodgers would only score again in the fifth inning on a Will Smith home run and Freeman RBI fielder’s choice.

The Yankees’ bullpen stepped up with the lead, allowing just two baserunners over the final five innings of the game.

Game 5 will go Wednesday night back at Yankee Stadium, with Gerrit Cole scheduled to face Jack Flaherty as New York continues to try and avoid elimination.
