Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors not only captured his fourth NBA championship Thursday, but the superstar guard also claimed his first NBA Finals MVP award — winning in a unanimous vote.
The Warriors hoisted the Larry O’Brien Trophy for the fourth time in eight years after defeating the Boston Celtics 103-90 during Game 6 of the NBA Finals.
Although Curry was named the Most Valuable Player of the regular season back-to-back in 2015 and ’16, the NBA Finals MVP eluded him during Golden State’s previous title wins. Andre Iguodala earned the honour in 2015 while Kevin Durant won it twice in 2017 and ’18.
“This one hits different for sure, just knowing what the last three years have meant, what it’s been like from injuries to changing of the guard in the rosters,” said Curry. “… I can say it now, I don’t know how many teams could carry that as long as we have with the expectations of comparing us now to teams of past and make it to the mountaintop again.”
The NBA Finals MVP award was renamed in 2009 after Celtics legend and 11-time NBA champion Bill Russell.
“I’ve said it many times. Steph reminds me so much of Tim Duncan. Obviously, totally different players. But from just a humanity standpoint, a talent standpoint, humility, confidence — a wonderful combination that makes everybody want to win for him,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said.
“Steph ultimately is why this run has happened, much like Timmy in San Antonio,” Kerr added. “I’m happy for everybody, but I’m thrilled for Steph. To me this is his crowning achievement in what already has been an incredible career.”
