Mired in season-long struggles, the Montreal Canadiens made a move with an eye toward the future on Wednesday night, trading defenceman Ben Chiarot to the Florida Panthers for forward Tyler Smilanic and two draft picks.
Chiarot, one of the most coveted players on the trade market, had widely been considered a candidate to be dealt before Monday’s trade deadline. With his departure finalized, the attention in Montreal turns to what general manager Kent Hughes intends to do next.
