Wells hits late go-ahead single as Yankees beat Red Sox to force Game 3

The New York Yankees will live to play another day.

Austin Wells drove in Jazz Chisholm Jr. on a hard-hit single down the right-field line in the bottom of the eighth, lifting New York to a 4-3 Game 2 win over the Boston Red Sox.

The decisive swing came off reliever Garrett Whitlock, marking the first earned run he had allowed since Aug. 17.

The Yankees got off to a quick start behind Ben Rice’s two-run shot in the first inning, but struggled to solve Boston’s bullpen once they removed Brayan Bello in the third inning.

But Wells stepped up to turn the tide in the eighth, and David Bednar locked it down in the ninth.

Trevor Story did the heavy lifting for the Red Sox early, driving in their first three runs with a two-run single in the third and a solo home run in the sixth — both swings levelling the score.

New York and Boston will now play a winner-takes-all Game 3 on Thursday, with the winner advancing to face the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS.

More to come.
