‘What just happened?’: Patriots’ game-ending debacle leaves football world in shock

Nearly 50 years after Pittsburgh Steelers legend Franco Harris completed “The Immaculate Reception,” the New England Patriots provided football fans with an equally shocking play Sunday evening.

But in this instance, it was for all the wrong reasons.

With the Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders tied at 24-all, New England decided to run a series of pitches in a last-ditch attempt to avoid overtime. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson pitched the ball to receiver Jacobi Meyers, who heaved it across the field and into the arms of opposing linebacker Chandler Jones, who had nothing but open field in front of him.

As the clock struck zero, and Jones strolled into the end zone, the Raiders miraculously found themselves on top to a score of 30-24.

It was truly the worst-case scenario for the Patriots, who could’ve guaranteed an extra frame if they simply kneeled out the clock.

Needless to say, fans, media and past players shared their opinions in regards to this blunder of epic proportion.
