What The R29 Fashion Team Is Excited For This September

To quote The September Issue, the documentary that follows the makings of Vogue‘s biggest issue of the year, September is the January of fashion. It’s Fashion Month, a time when, even amid the pandemic, the industry celebrates the talent and innovation it prides itself on.

For the Refinery29 team, it’s going to be a busy month. When New York Fashion Week arrives there will be tons of (in-person) shows, as well as digital releases, and many outfits to be planned. Later in the month, designers will take over London, Milan, and Paris.

Yet, fashion celebrations are also popping up in the art world, with the unveiling of the first part of Costume Institute’s “In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion” exhibit, which will follow the much-anticipated Met Gala red carpet, as well as the ballet debut of designers Christopher John Rogers and Esteban Cortázar at this year’s New York City Ballet fall gala.

Ahead, some of the fashion events and releases that our team is looking forward to this month.

Dior Exhibit At The Brooklyn Museum

“In addition to the Costume Institute’s ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,’ New York will be home to another fashion showcase this fall: ‘Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams’ that will take residence at the Brooklyn Museum. Opening on September 10, the exhibit will explore the history of the iconic French house — through garments, photographs, archival videos, sketches, and more — as helmed by Christian Dior and his various successors like Yves Saint Laurent, Raf Simons, and Maria Grazia Chiuri.” — Irina Grechko, Fashion Director

LaQuan Smith Takes Over The Empire State Building

“On September 9, New York designer LaQuan Smith will hold his spring ’21 show at the Empire State Building, a feat that has never been done in all the 90 years that the landmark has been around. According to Vogue, Smith is shutting down the entire building, with plans to utilize every floor from the lobby to the observation deck. ‘I have the most vivid memories of being in grade school and going on field trips with my classmates to the Empire State Building,’ Smith told the publication. “I remember being in awe of its magnitude, so it’s really amazing all these years later to be showing my collection there.” Suffice to say, attendees will be in awe, too.” — Eliza Huber, Fashion Writer

Glitter Party

“I’ve been a fan of Miu Miu’s glittery shoes since fall ’11 when the house debuted its now-famous sparkly boots that were consequently spotted on every influencer and editor in town. Now, I finally got my hands on my very own pair of Miu Miu glitter sandals, thanks to a special birthday present and The RealReal’s extensive selection of luxury resale items. Come New York Fashion Week, I’ll parade in the daylight in the footwear equivalent of a disco ball.” — FSS

Slipping Into Fall

“While slip season may be coming to an end, after seeing Zoë Kravitz in this electric blue dress, I am reconsidering my fall shopping wishlist. Designed by Araks, the silk georgette style comes in several different colors. I am eyeing the hot pink hue, which I could see myself styling with a leather jacket and lug-sole loafers once temperatures near fall territory.” — IG

Fashion Is On Pointe

“This month, the New York City Ballet is celebrating its new season with the fall fashion gala. Hosted by the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker and Laverne Cox, the gala includes a show featuring ballet premieres by choreographers Sidra Bell and Andrea Miller, alongside costumes by Christopher John Rogers and Esteban Cortázar. If there was a night tailor-made for me, it’s this one.” — Frances Solá-Santiago, Fashion Writer

Target’s Coming For Our Wallets

Target’s latest designer collaboration is coming in September — and trust me, it’s worth waking up early for. The collection follows last year’s Designer Dress collab that included partnerships with Christopher John Rogers, Alexis, and Rixo. This time around, the partnership will include separates and accessories from Rachel Comey, Sandy Liang, Nili Lotan, and Victor Glemaud and be available in sizes XXS to 4X. I suggest planning ahead and checking out the lookbook when it launches next week, so you’ll be ready to hit ‘add to cart’ when the collection finally drops.” — EH
