The XFL has filed for bankruptcy, almost certainly spelling the end of the second iteration of the league.
The eight-team professional football league, conceived by World Wrestling Entertainment chairman Vince McMahon as an out-of-season competitor to the NFL, had canceled the rest of its return season last month because of the coronavirus pandemic. It suspended operations and laid off its employees on Friday.
