Yesavage, Blue Jays dominate Dodgers to take 3-2 lead in World Series

The Toronto Blue Jays are one win away from a World Series title.

After Davis Schneider and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. opened Game 5 of the Fall Classic with back-to-back home runs, the Blue Jays rode a dominant Trey Yesavage outing to a 6-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

They will take a 3-2 series lead back to Toronto for Friday’s Game 6 (8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+).

Yesavage struck out 12 Dodgers over seven innings of one-run ball, setting the record for most punchouts by a rookie in a World Series game.

He allowed just three hits, with the only run coming across on a solo homer by Kiké Hernández in the third inning.

Offensively, the Blue Jays added some insurance in the fourth, seventh and eighth innings.

In the fourth, Ernie Clement brought Daulton Varsho home with a sacrifice fly after Toronto’s centre-fielder reached on a leadoff triple.

The Blue Jays then strung things together in the seventh, getting traffic on the bases to chase Blake Snell from the game. Edgardo Henriquez entered to face Guerrero out of the bullpen with runners on first and third, but he threw ball four to the backstop, bringing in Addison Barger from third. Bo Bichette then singled to score Andrés Giménez.

The series will head into an off-day on Thursday, as both teams travel back to Rogers Centre. But Game 6 will go on Friday night, as Kevin Gausman takes the ball for the Blue Jays with a chance to claim the third World Series title in franchise history.
