30 Perfect May Buys From H&M, & Other Stories and Arket

The start of the year is notoriously tough to get through for many reasons, not least the miserable weather. But the good news is you’ve made it! Sunshine is here, and I think I speak for us all when I say we’re ready to put grey days behind us and enter spring with a refreshed approach to our wardrobes and the year ahead. It may still feel a little chilly in the air now, but the weather is definitely warming up with bright days to make up for the cooler breeze.

With these changes comes an injection of new-season fashion to look forward to as well. Fresh drops are already arriving from both the high street and designers, which means a whole host of new inspo to get us excited about our outfits again. And since the days are starting to warm up, it means we can actually shed our puffer-coat layers and enjoy getting a bit more inventive with our style, too.

At this moment, there are three high-street brands, in particular, all of us on the Who What Wear UK team turn to first for inspiration and for the most exciting pieces to invest in for the coming months: Arket& Other Stories and H&M. So to get you off on the right foot this month, I’ve combed their new-in collections and compiled 30 of the best May buys below.

You’ll find a mix of elevated wardrobe classics and some more joyful statement pieces, too. There are beautiful trench coats and perfect blue jeans—the building blocks of any successful spring wardrobe. And then there are some prints and pops of colour as well—because if there’s ever a time of year to introduce some brights into your life, it’s spring. Kermit green and sugary lilac seem to be the shades of choice right now, and they look particularly elevated in the form of tailoring. But honestly, anything goes this year. Call it dopamine dressing at its finest.

So whether you’re starting to think about what to wear to all those weddings you’ve been invited to (anyone else’s summer weekends totally booked up already?) or you’re just looking to up your basics game this year, keep scrolling and you’ll find inspiration for what to look out for in your own wardrobe right now as well as links to shop if you’re in the market for some refreshing updates for spring and beyond.

Such a chic, affordable trench.

A throw-on floral dress goes a long way in spring.

Denim shirts are everywhere again, and I can’t help but fall for them.

Jeans are a seasonless staple.

This is such a pretty dress. I’d wear it with trainers or sandals.

There’s something about this cream shacket that feels really expensive.

A classic pair of black trousers will work so hard in your wardrobe all year round. Pair these with vests, shirts and loafers or sandals for spring.

I’m a sucker for a Western vibe, and this dress balances smart-casual perfectly.

This long cardigan is the perfect transitional throw-on layer.

Knitted dresses are the gift that keeps on giving each season.

I love this bright-fuchsia cardigan paired with casual blue denim.

I’ve been searching for a pair of dungarees recently, and I think these might be the perfect ones for spring.

A perfect desk-to-drinks dress.

So fresh, so clean!

This is the kind of versatile dress you’ll get so much wear out of.

A white shirt is a spring essential.

I can’t stop thinking about this waistband.

I’m obsessed with the sleeves on this dress and can imagine it looking so good with tan leather accessories.

This is such an easy way to add a fun pop of colour to tailoring.

Dare I say, the perfect trench?

So. Chic.

One of my favourite spring style hacks is to add a statement gold necklace to basics.

This pretty dress has already sold out once, so act fast if you love it as much as I do. Bravo, Arket.

A sure-fire way to update your everyday looks.

There’s a reason this is Arket’s best-selling blazer.

A racer tank is an essential spring layer.

I can’t get over how expensive the cut of these jeans looks.

This polished linen shirt will see you through spring and summer.

Everyone needs a Breton in their spring wardrobe.

I’d layer this fun knit with creamy neutrals to add a fresh 2022 twist to them.
